Ronald Dunlap, a member of UW Colleges and UW-Extension’s Board of Visitors, received a Wisconsin MLK Heritage Award during the 34th annual Tribute and Ceremony honoring the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Jan. 20, 2014, at the State Capitol in Madison.
Dunlap is a recently retired educator and advocate for children in the Appleton Area School Distrcit. He served as an elementary school principal and later as the district’s minority student services coordinator, addressing steady increases in Appleton’s minority student enrollment.
In presenting the award on behalf of Gov. Scott Walker’s office, UW-Extension’s Jonathan Overby, who coordinated the ceremony, said, “Dunlap’s mission connects students and their families with education and community resources. He has worked to ensure students of color succeed socially and academically by engaging them, their teachers and their parents in open communication. Today he continues that mission around issues of race and improving the achievement of students of color.”

In addition to Overby, other colleagues you will see on the dais include Ray Cross, Malcolm Brett, director of UW-Extension’s public broadcasting division, and James Steinbach, director of television at Wisconsin Public Television.
A highlight of the event was the performance of the GMAC (Gospel Music According to Chicago) Choir singing “Dwell in the House.”
